Beach soccer

The most popular sport in the world, football has found a new playing field for almost thirty years now: sandy beaches. A leisure activity that has become increasingly popular, so much so that it has been, in part, taken over and structured by the International Football Federation (FIFA). However, the simplicity of its organisation, its benefits and quite simply the pleasure of playing the most popular sport in the world make beach soccer a must on French beaches in the summer.

History and evolution

The first official experiences of beach football were in Brazil in the 1950s. Indeed, it was at this time that a first tournament was organised between the different neighbourhoods of Rio. After this, for many years, beach football once again became a leisure activity, a purely recreational activity to be enjoyed with friends or football fans. In 1992, a pilot event was organised in Los Angeles. The following year, the first official professional competition was held at Miami Beach with teams from the United States, Brazil, Argentina and Italy. The first television broadcast took place a year later, at a tournament in Copacabana (Brazil). At the end of 2004, the International Football Federation (FIFA) again took an interest in beach soccer and structured the activity, in particular with the organisation of a World Cup in 2005. Since 2009, this World Cup has been held every two years. In 2016, the former FIFA president asked that beach soccer be recognised as an Olympic sport.

Its benefits

The first is obviously to practice a physical activity during your holidays which will ensure you a "cardio" activity. Although in traditional football, endurance is the norm and accelerations the exception, the opposite is the case for beach soccer: a smaller field, a shorter playing time, sand, which requires fast passes and plenty of short runs, meaning that you have to work your reflexes and coordination. Also, beach soccer is great since there is no danger when falling and there is less risk of injury from contact or tackling. Finally, organising a beach soccer match couldn't be simpler since no equipment is required. However, there is one precaution to take: protect the skin well with sunscreen and hydrate.

The second interest of this activity is socialisation. Taking part in a team sport at the beach, which is as popular as football means the chance of meeting new people and expanding your circle of acquaintances or friends during your holidays and even beyond. Also it is open to men and women with women’s soccer now becoming increasingly popular.

If you're a beach soccer player, you will probably end up with sand on your legs, arms, back and chest by the end of your match.
